The New Chambers Inklings
A famous group at Oxford got together to read their pre-published books to each other. They called themselves the Inklings. Their exercise in criticism and encouragement must have been good for them because two of the authors became well known, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkein.
We have started a group that will also be reading chapters from their literary works in process. We will be meeting at Loodles Coffee House in Windsor. The meeting time will be the first Monday of the month at 6:00 p.m. Call 970-346-1133 for more information.
High Tea Formal Dinner
We will have a “high tea” formal dinner on Friday, February 19 at 6:00 p.m. We will serve a filling meal in an English style. The evening will be open to all England study trip participants as well as Chambers College students and staff.
President Ong will present a short table talk on the challenges faced in the birthing of two historic American colleges.
IICS 2010 Vision Conference:
Christ, Culture and the Academy
Teri and Steve Ong have made the annual conference of the International Institute for Christian Studies a high priority. It is the perfect blend of spiritual encouragement, evangelistic and missionary outreach, and academic stimulation.
We are in the process of submitting a proposal to the IICS staff. Our tentative plan is to take students to the conference and have them hear the speakers and serve as conference room monitors and aides while the academic papers are presented. The cost would be $120.00 and would include 1 hour of Chambers College credit. We will arrange housing and meals. This trip would also be open to mature highschool students who have an interest in scholarship and Christian worldview or in being a potential academic missionary .
IICS is a missionary agency which places Christian professors on foreign campuses as a witness for Christ and encourages scholarship and research in Christian worldview topics. Steve and Teri have both presented papers at the annual conference and are tremendously encouraged by the missionary reports. They give a global snapshot of what is happening in higher education internationally.
We have had speakers we have met come to our church, and last year’s keynote speaker spoke to our students in the chapel of Emmanuel College at Cambridge on our recent England Study Trip. Drs. Alan and Elaine Storkey both gave masterful lectures to the students concerning Cambridge's history and influence on Christians today.
This years conference features Dr. Christine Schirrmacher and Dr. Harold Dean Trulear.

Chambers College had another successful study trip to England. It was a full trip with nine students, one parent, and three chaperones.
Students took two college courses in the liberal arts tradition to prepare for the trip. After studying fine arts using Britain for the laboratory of observation and English Puritan history, they then viewed and experienced their book learning in real life on site.
Students saw landmarks of great Puritans and church history such as John Bunyan's grave, the church of John Milton, Immanuel College, and John Wesley’s chapel and home. Students were also able to witness the beauty of England's fine arts including architecture, music concerts (Handel's Messiah), a theatrical play, and a trip to the National and Portrait Galleries.
In addition, they experienced the spiritual advantages of spending two Sundays at the Metropolitan Tabernacle and hearing Dr. Peter Masters and his associate pastor Chris Bus preach and teach.
Trip to the British Museum
One of the students’ favorites is the British Museum excursion where they actually see 3000 year old accounts of battles recorded in the Bible, cylinder writings from the time of the Exile, and artifacts from the palace at Susa when Esther was queen. This year’s tour guide was Chris Laws, who guided us through to the major Biblical exhibits. Chris Laws is also an elder and the organist at the Metropolitan Tabernacle church.
Master Class
This trip was also rich in music appreciation. Besides hearing the Messiah performed in period costumes with music played on period instruments at the Royal Festival Hall, students attended a Master class at the 12th century Temple Church (home of the Knights Templar) under the direction of the world famous choral director John Rutter. At the end of the 5 hour session, the approximately 300 singers were recorded by BBC radio and their performance aired the next week.
Students also attended a viola contest at the Royal Academy of Music and a chamber music concert at St. Martin’s-in-the-Field Church.
Trip to the Library
Students also spent time with the dusty books at the Evangelical Library. We have found that the dust from old books clarifies one’s thinking!
