Bacccalaureate group

Chambers College held its first baccalaureate service April 11 on Sunday evening at Reformation Baptist Church. This academic service dates back to the 15th century and was held frequently in America until the most recent decades. It is a marriage of academics and the church, acknowledging God as the source of true wisdom. But because of the secularization of colleges, this service is almost extinct.

Our three graduates each gave a short message on what important spiritual lessons they had learned during their time at Chambers College. These messages were followed by a charge by our graduate student Erik Peterson, who used a word picture of a bookshelf and the three important books for life.

Chambers College continually refines and innovates to better accomplish the spiritual and scriptural objectives given in the Bible, especially when “innovation” means a return to historic roots.

A. W. Tozer made an observation regarding pressures against Biblical colleges that appeared two days after his death on May 15, 1963.

What theological school,.. could continue to operate if it were to make Christ Lord of its every policy? There may be some, and I hope there are, but I believe I am right when I say that most such schools to stay in business are forced to adopt procedures which find no justification in the Bible they profess to teach. So we have this strange anomaly: the authority of Christ is ignored in order to maintain a school to teach, among other things, the authority of Christ. p. 28

This quote is from The Forgotten Tozer, A. W. Tozer’s Challenge to Today’s Church, by Dr. J. D. Watson (Sola Sciptura Publications). He a pastor in Meeker, Colorado.

This quote appears in a book we will be reading for the Advanced Booking program (a group of individuals who once a month meet to share their thoughts on a book they have read). The program is heavily centered on Puritan books.

There are continual pressures to carry out the spiritual pursuits in the church and the Bible college in the world’s way. But when such pursuits are done God’s way, God will get the glory. And that is what life is really all about.

All three graduates and the speaker Erik Peterson participated in the first Master Teachers Tour. Students presented a crest to the college president at the combined CHESS Chambers College Commencement service. This is an annual tradition as students design a crest that is representative of what they have learned and hold dear.

The students gave great detail at the presentation of the meaning of each part of the crest.

Chambers College at the CHEC Conference
Chambers College graduate student Annie Nelson will be presenting a seminar at the the CHEC conference on teaching of writing Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Forum II. She is a mainstay at the Inklings groups.

Graduate student Tessa Powell and Matthew Aden will be at the Chambers College booth as Steve and Teri will be returning from presenting a home school workshop in Barnstaple, England and will only be available Saturday at the conference.

Second Master Teachers Tour

We recently received a grant from the Oswald Chambers Foundation in England. We were invited to submit an application for a grant and it was suggested we apply for one that could help fund our Master Teachers Tour.

Chambers College received a $3,000 grant that can be used for the next Master Teachers Tour. We are considering whether to visit British Master Teachers as part of the next London trip. We will have details out as soon as we have more clear leading.

The last tour was one of the most powerful outworkings of God’s love and grace the leader had ever seen. God coordinated, integrated and blessed both the presenters and the small group of students.

Originally, we thought the tour would be a one time event and not a continual part of our program, primarily because it is a difficult undertaking to coordinate all the details. As President I thought it would be good to quit while we were ahead. I remarked to myself, “We could never do another one as grand as this one.”
It seemed like God kindly rebuked that thought with another thought, “You didn’t do the first one, and I can do a second one.”

So the fleece was offered that there might be some type of encouragement for us to do another one. It was not many days later I received a call from a friend of the college to apply for a grant from the England-based Oswald Chambers Foundation for a specific project, with the suggestion that maybe the Master Teachers Tour would be a good project to mention.

The first tour featured outstanding, some better known and some relatively unknown, men of God. Their combined ministry experience totaled over 400 years.
One of the main reasons for the tour is to hear a summary of the sage advice from battle hardened and experienced men to help the new recruits prepare for the future warfare for Christ.

ROGER MAGNUSON AND GROUP

One of our Master Teachers is one of my heroes, Roger Magnuson. He was under cancer treatments when we arrived and the prognosis was not good. He shared his thoughts on Saturday evening surrounded by his family in a restaurant in an upper room in Minneapolis. Sunday we all rode the buses to pick up Sunday School kids and then enjoyed Roger Magnuson as he spoke in Sunday School and morning service.

Roger Magnuson had only one book to suggest as his favorite. It was The Christian in Complete Armor, by William Gurnall. He stated it is lengthy, but not tedious nor redundant. I had the book on my shelf but had not read more than the preface by J. C. Ryle. I treasured the book based upon heritage. I had visited William Gurnall’s town where he pastored.

The Ongs came to America from Lavenham, England in 1630. Lavenham, England is where William Gurnall began pastoring in 1644. He also attended Emmanuel College in Cambridge. This is the college we visit when we go to England, and which was the home of many of the Puritans who came to America in the early 1600’s.

Recently a friend sent me a 1658 first volume, third edition of The Christian in Complete Armor. That was the year Gurnall published his second volume also.
We were grateful were able to be with Roger Magnuson, long time Chambers College advisory board member, who passed away eight months after our time with him on the first Master Teachers Tour.

Chambers College Press

We have purchased some new equipment that now makes it possible to produce hardbound books and softbound in-house. We can produce short runs of books for around $4.00 for soft bound (200 pages), or for an additional $4.00 we can make it hard bound.

Samples are available of our work. We also can now do the more professional spiral bound books, as well as the comb-binding. We do provide these services to those connected with Chambers College or CHESS.
